Tennessee’s Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is gearing up for its Great Strides Walk in Chattanooga, which raises funds for research and helps generate awareness about the disease. The 2010 event will be held April 18, at Greenway Farms.

The Walk has drawn hundreds of people in the past, says Tiffany Kerns, a spokesperson for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Thanks to local efforts tofind a cure, the Foundation is able to invest more in drug discovery and development,” she says.

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease that affects more than 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. About 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The inherited disease causes the body to produce unusually- thick, sticky mucus that can lead to life-threatening lung infections, and prevent the body from breaking down and absorbing food.

During the last 25 years, the median age of survival for those with the disease has more than doubled to 37 years. “Research funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is making a huge difference in the lives of those affected,” notes Kerns. “There are now more therapies than ever before.”
