Greek Revolution

Across the country, interest in Greek societies is either flat or waning… but not at UTC.

In fact, its fraternities and sororities are so popular in Chattanooga that the university will add two new groups this fall: Delta Zeta for the ladies and Delta Upsilon for the men—bringing the total number to 18. Disputing all negative stereotypes, these swelling societies add up to great things both on and off campus.

One shining example is Sean Dunn, past president of Lambda Chi Alpha. Dunn was recently one of four men in the nation to be awarded the 2010 Award of Distinction by the North American Interfraternity Conference, a trade association serving 73 fraternities. Among his long list of impressive accomplishments, Dunn spearheaded a campus-wide fundraiser supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of his biological brother.

And he’s not alone. Each sorority or fraternity supports a national nonprofit with at least one annual philanthropic event, and many individual members give their time to worthy causes in the community such as after-school mentoring to high school students.

So whether it’s Sigma Chi, Kappa Delta, or Phi Kappa Sigma, more Greeks are making a positive impact in the community. And that’s pretty impressive in any language.
